Behind the Scenes: Décor

Behind the Scenes: Décor

At SkyView on Hay, we not only provide a one-of-a-kind space for your events, but we also off decorating services to provide décor that is unique to your big day! We work to make sure that your vision becomes a reality. To make that happen, there are many different steps we take to ensure unique, intricate, and authentic décor for any occasion.

Recently, we had the pleasure of designing the décor for Fayetteville Christian School’s 2017 Prom. The theme for the night was “Enchanted Forest” and we were so excited to get started and transform our ballroom into a scene straight out of a storybook. To get started, we met with the prom committee and gathered their ideas about color scheme, centerpieces, and any extra décor that they wanted to include.

After hearing that the committee wanted centerpieces reflecting the organic and natural feel of the forest, along with some twinkling lights and pops of floral in their dark purple color scheme, we set to work planning and sketching out possibilities for the table décor. Here is what some of those first sketches looked like:

During the meeting with the committee, we were able to get an idea of what décor we already had to work with, and what more we needed to gather. We do have a large variety of decor already available, but we strive to match the ideas and wants of every individual client. After sketching out the idea for the taller branch centerpieces, we wanted to add dimension to the room by alternating tables with lower centerpieces. In this case, we had vases and most other items for our 2nd centerpiece idea. However, the enchanted forest theme required a sense of natural and organic fixtures throughout, which led us to the idea of gathering fallen tree branches to make our centerpieces look authentic, unique, and natural.

Patience, and often times vision, is needed to go from this:

To something like this:

Once we gathered all of our materials, it was time to put everything together. To get the branches to appear to be lighted, we individually wrapped each branch in a set of copper colored wire LED lights, and then concealed the battery pack within the vases, between the branches. We also filled the bottom of the vases with layers of moss and pebbles to give a more natural look to the branches, almost as if they were miniature trees. Finally, we placed the finished centerpiece on a mirrored tray, and placed votives around the base to cast a soft glow around the table.

For the second type of centerpiece, we used full logs, pieces of a log, terrariums, candles, and live floral. We chose bunches of baby’s breath and deep purple flowers with a full bloom to really add color and an ornate feel to the table. We utilized gold mercury glass votives to add sparkle, as well as plenty of candles to give a glow to each and every table.
